A delightful, witty account of French history by an outstanding writer who was in the forefront of the fight to get Dreyfus' conviction quashed from 1899 to 1906 and whose fame never blinded him to social issues.
Unless you are fascinated by the anticlericalism at the turn of the XXth Century in France (a reaction, in part, to the unprincipled stance the Church took against Dreyfus, whom Anatole France helped rehabilitate at least as much as Zola), this book may fall out of your hands after a few pages. Interesting and provocative at the time of its publication, it has now lost a lot of its relevance and interest. I do recommend, though, most of Anatole France’s other books.
