The Inner Light by Henry Porada is a beautiful and touching story about a young boys struggle with coping with his grandfathers death.The story begins with Jimmy skateboarding through a park and coming to rest upon a bench where he pulls out a picture of his deceased grandfather. Jimmy is deeply saddened and begins to dream that his grandfather is sitting next to him and they are having a conversation.
Jimmy and his grandfather reminisce for a while before Jimmy finally asks him, “Why did you leave me?”
My favorite part is when Porada writes, “Grandpa whispered, ‘Remember all that I taught you. You are my shining hope. God lives in your heart. I have to go now…’”
After the experience with his grandfather in the park, Jimmy runs into Sam who is a candle maker and old friend of his grandfather. Sam gives him a special candle with the words, “Let your inner light shine” on it.
The gift that Jimmy received leads him on a journey to discover the meaning behind the saying. On this Journey, he finds many other gifts that will ultimately help him to live a life of Joy, Peace, Love and Hope.
Children will learn from Porada’s book that they have an inner force within them that can guide them to do the right things, make the right choices and ultimately live to their potential.
I highly recommend Porada’s book to assist in the loss of a loved one as well as giving kids an introduction to the power that lies within them and their ability to make this world a better place.
